Why Goals Need a Reason, Not Just a Target
The target tells you what to do; the reason tells you why to keep doing it on the day you don't feel like it. Goals that skip the reason survive right up until the first inconvenient morning.
- A number on its own has nothing to appeal to when motivation dips
- A reason tied to identity outlasts a reason tied to a feeling
- Writing the reason down makes it retrievable on a bad day
- Vague reasons ("get healthier") don't hold up under pressure
- Specific reasons ("keep up with my kids") are harder to abandon
